There are some researchers out there (like Raquel Urtasun from Waabi) who are taking different approaches to self-driving. For starters, in Waabi they are tackling truck driving, and they intend to solve only hub-to-hub operations instead of everywhere to-everywhere driving.

But then again, it's not just a research problem –there are more mundane issues like legal ones.
